Spam it Up with Wikipedia! Or Not

Wikipedia's "editor-contributed" concept backs up the idea that there never will be a perfect multi-edited web site. Dmoz got a bad reputation several years back and still not actively accepting web sites in lots of categories.

The type of editorship and complexity between the two websites is vastly different. An obvoius example is that Wikipedia's editors have to manage well over 1 million content-rich articles, whereas Dmoz only has to manage simple text links and descriptions within their index. The margin for error and spam is exponentially higher for Wikipedia.

Searching around I found several places that talk about Wikipedia spam and even give some tips on how one might go about it. In my opinion, the best and most efficient way to get into Wiki is to simply build a quality resource page or pages for a particular category in Wikipedia. Heck, you could even go for a much less quality site like a few of the "external" links on Wiki's diet pills page or even a more obscure page about furniture.

Lots of other people have already noted the nice boost in Wikipedia's rankings in Google. There must be something to spamming Wikipedia if the BBC is even doing it, right?

Linking from your site that is now listed in Wiki can give help another web site within the same topic area. A simple way this might look would be:

  • One, Wikipedia page linking to your non-commercial page.
  • Two, your non-commercial page links to your commercial page.
  • Three, your commercial page gets a boost by way of A linking to B and B linking to C (often called a "three-way," or A -> B -> C).

A worse case scenario is that your site eventually gets removed, but it's likely that Google will not demote Wiki's outbound link value for some time.

My opinion - demoted link or not, you'd still get direct traffic and credibility for placement on Wikipedia In fact, still having a link in Dmoz is considered valuable, especially links in Dmoz over 4 or 5 years old, so a link in Wikipedia should be pretty solid by comparison for short and long term.

Wikipedia not monitored for the protection of minors!

Wikipedia not monitored for the protection of minors! Wikipedia harbors pedophiles who are actively trolling for children to molest, Wikipedia continues to allow editors back even after they sexually harrass and verbally attack minors and others on Wikipedia, Wikipedia sympathizes with those who advocate child sexual abuse, and allows those who edit Wikipedia to introduce dangerous bias into articles of which content may harm children and who are using Wikipedia to search for vulnerable children.

Wikipedia not monitored for the protection of minors! This is just one reason why schools and parents should consider blocking Wikipedia.
